ARTHROPTER definition

The underlying architecture shared by all the flying vertebrate natural models (birds, bats, and pterosaurs.) Arthropter can be applied to any of the animals that follow this architecture as well as any man made system that incorporates these same elements. "Flapping" is only one element of this system. "Ornipthopter" encompasses a wide variety of man-made flapping wing flight systems. All arthropters could be considered ornithopters, but not all ornithopters are arthropters

Arthropter (articulating wing): an articulated wing flight system capable of changing the wing shape at 3 pivot points on the horizontal plane (shoulder, elbow, wrist) which fold the wing and sweep the wing tip, and at at least 2 pivot points along the vertical plane (shoulder, wing tip) enabling 2 additional independent ranges of motion: flap and wing tip dip.
